Your weekly source for sensations in mobile-integrated healthcare and community paramedicine is back.
Welcome to Issue #9!
This week, we're diving into the expanding world of community paramedicine and mobile integrated healthcare. While some of the articles may not be the latest, their insights are more relevant than ever. From innovative programs to global trends, we're exploring how these healthcare models are transforming emergency response and patient care on an international level.
This issue kicks off with a standard article on a local program, but as we go deeper, each piece will explore a different country’s approach. In the “So What?” section, we’ll break down why this matters and what it means on a larger scale.

Aging Programs 🇺🇸

CAPABLE, a program initiated by Sarah Szanton in 2009, aims to help older adults age in their communities while reducing unnecessary medical costs. Through a unique approach of in-home visits by healthcare professionals and home repair workers, participants receive tailored support to improve mobility and living conditions.
Over the years, CAPABLE has expanded to multiple sites across states and countries, benefiting thousands of older Americans. The program, no longer reliant on NIH funding, has proven to be cost-effective, with each $3,000 investment resulting in $30,000 in savings. By focusing on preventive care, CAPABLE is reshaping the U.S. health system, emphasizing the long-lasting impact of NIH-supported research initiatives. 🏡👩⚕️

International Rural Health 🇦🇺

Mildura resident Coral Hendy benefited from the innovative community paramedic program in Merbein, which offers weekly health check-ups for chronic conditions. The initiative, a collaboration between local health services and universities, aims to reduce hospital admissions and provide accessible healthcare in rural areas. Paramedics now focus on managing chronic diseases, conducting screenings, and monitoring existing conditions.
The success of the program is evident in the positive impact on patients like Ms. Hendy, who no longer face long hospital waits. With plans to expand the service and introduce a mobile clinic, community paramedicine is proving to be a cost-effective and efficient model for rural Australians.
Community Paramedicine 🇨🇦

County of Simcoe Paramedic Services is planning new stations in Waubaushene, Severn, and Wasaga Beach, as well as three additional posts in Barrie to keep up with increasing calls for service. Updates were provided on the operationalization of the Barrie-Simcoe Emergency Campus, completion of a new station in Bradford, ongoing projects, and plans for new facilities.
The community paramedicine program aims to enhance health outcomes for vulnerable populations through wellness clinics, home visits, alternative response engagement, and patient follow-up programs. The CARE pilot project offers non-police responses for mental health and addiction crises, aiming to reduce emergency department visits and interactions with the criminal justice system. Plans for mental health training for all paramedic staff and proactive initiatives to identify unmet patient needs were also discussed.
So What? 🌎️

Mobile Integrated Healthcare – Community Paramedicine (MIH-CP) programs are gaining traction worldwide, demonstrating their potential to reduce hospital admissions, improve patient outcomes, and enhance healthcare accessibility.
Examining MIH-CP across different countries provides valuable insights into how various healthcare systems integrate community-based care, address local health disparities, and optimize emergency response. From paramedics in Hamilton being recognized for exemplary service to projects in Australia reducing emergency visits, global perspectives reveal best practices and innovative approaches.
Understanding these diverse implementations helps refine MIH-CP models, ensuring they are adaptable, efficient, and capable of meeting the unique needs of different populations.
